We are seeking a talented Site Director to oversee and manage our business in the city of Freiburg, Germany. With it’s over 100 employees and professionals the site is recognized as a high-quality provider for drug development services. Freiburg site is part of Charles River’s Discovery business which supports global pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies to drive new innovative therapies for patients. In this leadership role you would be responsible for ensuring all aspects of the site operations, science and business are well managed in accordance with the Charles River Discovery Strategy and business goals. Job Summary

Work with Regional General Manager to direct the site towards integrated site operations and managing site annual budget. Interact internally and externally with senior Discovery management to achieve the overall goals.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide leadership in the overall management and performance of the site. 
  • Foster effective communication and identify problems in overall site operations. 
  • Develop and implement effective solutions for resolving operational issues including contingency plan. 
  • Develop, implement and manage a program that will continually review processes to ensure that they are efficient and maximize the use of all applicable resources focusing on quality execution.
  • Work with other site senior managers to identify new business opportunities for internal or external development.
  • Manage site operations annual budget and maintain clear cost controls (including capital investments). Develop and manage departmental budgets and authorize expenditures as appropriate. Approve budget and expenses of direct and indirect reports.
  • Contribute to the development of major business proposals for key clients and represent the site and company as required.
  • Ensure that policies, practices, and procedures including Discovery standardized processes are used by all staff and adhere to all applicable governing regulatory agencies and any other guideline.
  • Attain assigned and targeted site KPIs (including room utilization, DLU, Rev/FTE, etc.).
  • Interview and participate in the selection of qualified departmental personnel. Recommend, review and approve personnel actions, including hiring, promotions and raises. Partner with Human Resources in the handling of disciplinary issues. 
  • Monitor performance of direct reports and conduct performance appraisals of direct reports and provide regular coaching and counselling. Prepare and deliver salary and performance reviews; review and approve performance and salary appraisals initiated by direct reports. Provide input for appraisals of indirect (matrix) reports.
  • Contribute to the development of short- and long-range operational objectives, organizational structure, and staffing requirements to meet the site’s long-term growth and financial objectives.
  • Drive and support global/regional Discovery business integration activities in key areas including technical, scientific and regulatory operations, including managing budgets, planning and execution of assigned projects, resolving issues and removing barriers to progress and communicating project status.
  • Oversee the development of departmental plans for backup and succession of key departmental personnel for subordinate departments.
  • Participate and where appropriate, lead internal and/or external teams to select, implement and/or harmonize processes to maximize efficiency, market competitiveness and the overall goals of Charles River.
  • Ensure client expectations are met and issues involving study execution, quality or reporting are resolved in a way that maximizes client satisfaction.
  • Work with the Regional Manager to lead site expansion and development projects. 
  • Identify potential new services with support from the Senior Discovery Management Team to be implemented locally.
  • Work with the Regional General Manager to represent the site to government, regulatory agencies, local, state and federal officials, industry groups, key customers and the general public as required.
  • Job Qualifications

  • Education: Advanced degree (Masters Degree, M.B.A, and/or Ph.D.) in scientific or business-related discipline.
  • Experience: 5 - 8 years related management experience in research, pharmaceutical or biopharmaceutical environment. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be accepted as a satisfactory substitute for the specific education and experience listed above.
  • Language: German & English (Fluent)
  • Other:  Understanding of governmental regulations and guidelines applicable to the care and use of laboratory animals. Knowledge of quality standards and other FDA/EMA regulations applicable to non-clinical testing programs. Excellent organizational skills and the ability to meet deadlines. Excellent communication (both written and verbal), leadership and negotiation skills. Ability to interact appropriately with all levels of employees, while at the same time support the efforts of departmental teams. Entrepreneurial attitude with a strong financial acumen.
  • Competencies

  • Strong business background ideally in a CRO environment, not exclusively oncology.
  • Operational experience with regard in leadership and resource planning (people, space, equipment).
  • Knowledge of the operational side through day-to-day site operations and ability to oversee possibilities for improvement.
  • Business proficiency level in German language. Ability to communicate with local authorities and governmental institutions as appropriate. 
  • Communication skills and ability to recognize communication barriers in order to communicate effectively at the site and corporate levels. Communication with all the employees also the ones who are not fluent in English is essential. Interest in the people, their performance and their needs. 
  • Curiosity. Interest in how/why things work or do not work and actively taking part in solution finding with site senior leadership as well as with site staff.
